This chapter examines the components of nutrition planning as conceptualized by universities and some international agencies, and the multisectorial nutrition planning activity which was undertaken for several years by units established in several low-income countries and continues to operate in a few countries. The country experiences discussed contrast sharply with the conceptual and technical issues, indicating that the sustainability of such efforts relates primarily to bureaucracy and politics. The legacies of multisectorial nutrition planning and its effects on current views about international nutrition and on some more effective nutrition programmes are considered.
