    [Prospective analysis of nursing education] Analisis prospectivo de la educacion en enfermeria

    This article addresses an urgent need in the nursing profession in Latin America--to develop new strategies so that nursing can play a more effective role in the World Health Organization's (WHO) Strategy for Health for All in the Year 2000. The methodology selected for this transitional role was prospective analysis. In Latin America, prospective analysis has been used in the past in designing educational strategies for health institutions in medicine, dentistry and public health. In 1986 prospective analysis was introduced with the publication of an article entitled "Prospective Analysis of Medical Education". After 1986 it was agreed that such a methodology should also be used in nursing institutions. Prospective analysis is defined as a methodology that examines an actual issue and/or through a step-by-step analysis proposes changes for the future (of a project) by taking into account all consequences of the proposed changes. To date, prospective analysis has been used in 16 countries in the region. Even though the majority of nursing institutions are still in the diagnostic stages of their projects, it is apparent that using prospective analysis in their strategies for change has helped them coordinate their educational and service-oriented goals towards developing more global institutional objectives. This methodology is also being used in 10 countries among WHO's regions worldwide. The Pan American Health Organization serves as the coordinating agency. 2 appendices are: "Objective-Image of Nursing in the Year 2000," and "Instrument of Prospective Analysis."
