    Depo-Provera: IPPF states the facts.

    IPPF News 3(5):1, 3. September-October 1978.

FDA refused to license Depo-Provera for use as a contraceptive in the U.S. However, the ban has wider reaching effects since U.S. law prohibits the export of drugs not approved by FDA. IPPF has been distributing the drug to some 42 countries for their family planning programs, the demand for it is increasing, and its use carefully monitored. Depo-Provera is considered to be safe, efficient, and convenient, and increased incidence of mammary tumors associated with the drug has not been proved. Depo-Provera is also acceptable to women who are unable to tolerate IUD or chemical contraceptive agents.
