RESOLUTIONS AND DECISIONS ADOPTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY DURING ITS FORTY-EIGHTH SESSION. 1994; 1:231-3.On December 20, 1993, the UN General Assembly issued the resolution contained in this document in response to reports from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. The resolution opens by referring to relevant UN and international resolutions and actions regarding the plight of refugees and reaffirming the activities and importance of the UN Office. Particular commendations are addressed to the High Commissioner and her staff and to the least developed countries which host millions of refugees. The resolution notes with concern that the number of refugees continues to increase and that their protection continues to be unlawfully jeopardized. The institution of asylum is also threatened by those who misuse it, and States are called upon to uphold asylum as an indispensable instrument for the protection of refugees. Efforts to prevent conditions which provoke the migration of refugees are called for, and the work of the High Commissioner to protect women and children is welcomed. States are asked to adopt the 1951 Convention and the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees and to support the programs of the High Commissioner. Efforts to protect the safety of relief workers are called for, and an appeal is made for financial donations to the work of the Office.
