Abstract: This paper looks retrospectively at 511 patients who have received ethinyl estradiol 200 mg plus dl-norgestrel 2 mg, given in 2 divided doses within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse, as post coital contraception at Brook Advisory Centre (Avon) from January 1979 to April 1980. Specific follow-up appointments were kept by 298 patients. 97 patients were seen again at a later date (varying from 1 month to 18 months later) and had obviously not become pregnant. 11 pregnancies occurred, 8 of these were in patients who had had unprotected intercourse at midcycle. The pregnancy rate for midcycle in this series is 5%, the overall pregnancy rate being 2%. The possibility of returning to the previous regimen of 5 mg ethinyl estradiol for 5 days, for those patients exposed at midcycle, is indicated, despite the higher incidence of side effects and the increased severity of nausea and vomiting in some patients.
