Abstract: A description of the 8th National Fertility Survey of Japan, which was scheduled to be conducted in June 1982, is presented. A brief analysis of recent fertility trends is first provided, and the methodology of the survey is outlined. The main topics covered by the survey include trends in marriage patterns; attitudes toward marriage, including age at marriage; factors affecting age at marriage; changes in marital fertility, fertility attitudes, and birth intervals; ideal family size; contraceptive knowledge among the unmarried; and induced abortion among the married.
