Abstract:
Work with women belonging to indigenous groups in Latin America needs to take into account both their identity as women and their identity as indigenous people, and the interplay between these identities. Indigenous women do not reject their culture, but want to change certain traditions in order to promote justice. Novib and Hivos, two Dutch development organisations, organised a workshop with local experts to discuss how to support indigenous women. Two important dilemmas were identified: the tension between collective and individual rights, and the need to link and address social and economic exclusion with cultural discrimination. Holistic solutions are needed. Changing power relations is a long-term process, which also needs to deal with fighting gender-based violence. NGOs need to change their attitude towards their target groups, and think and work for the long term. This is a challenge, given the current emphasis on short-term, measurable results. (author's)
Spanish Abstract:
Al trabajar con mujeres pertenecientes a grupos aborígenes en América Latina se deben tener en cuenta tanto su identidad como mujeres como su identidad como pueblo indígena, y la interacción entre estas dos identidades. Las mujeres indígenas no rechazan su cultura, pero desean cambiar determinadas tradiciones con el fin de promover la justicia. Hivos y Novib, dos organizaciones de desarrollo holandesas, han organizado un taller junto con expertos locales para discutir cómo brindar asistencia a las mujeres indígenas. Se identificaron dos dilemas importantes: la tensión entre los derechos colectivos e individuales, y la necesidad de vincular y orientar la exclusión social y económica con la discriminación cultural. Se necesitan soluciones holísticas. El cambio en las relaciones de poder es un proceso a largo plazo, donde también se debe abordar la lucha contra la violencia basada en el género. Las ONG necesitan cambiar su actitud hacia los grupos objetivo y pensar y trabajar para obtener resultados a largo plazo. Debido a que actualmente el énfasis se pone en la obtención de resultados mensurables a corto plazo, esta necesidad constituye un verdadero desafío. (del autor)
