Abstract:

The 16th edition of this comprehensive manual on contraceptive technology features 2 special sections on HIV/AIDS and abnormal Pap smears. The section on HIV/AIDS covers US trends, HIV prevention in the reproductive health care setting, HIV testing and counseling, medical care and psychosocial support for infected patients, and workplace safety. The cervical cytological screening section addresses pathophysiology, risk factors for cervical cancer, technical aspects, screening intervals, Pap smear reporting systems, management of abnormal pap smear results, and treatment of squamous intraepithelial lesions. Sexuality and reproductive health, the menstrual cycle, and sexually transmitted diseases are addressed in separate chapters. The chapter on essentials of contraception discusses effectiveness, safety, and personal considerations. One chapter is dedicated to abstinence and the range of sexual expression (holding hands to erotic touching). The manual has reserved many pages to discussing condoms, including their mechanism of action, cost, effectiveness, instructions, providing condoms, and advantages and disadvantages. One chapter covers each of the following contraceptive method groups: vaginal spermicides, barrier methods other than the male condom, oral contraceptives, other hormonal methods, the IUD, withdrawal, sexual sterilization, and emergency contraception. The manual has a chapter on fertility awareness. It addresses postpartum contraception and breast feeding. Pregnancy testing and management of early pregnancy are covered in the chapter before the one discussing induced abortion. Separate chapters address the following topics: menstrual problems and common gynecologic concerns; infertility; education and counseling; adolescent sexual behavior, pregnancy, and childbearing; dynamics of reproductive behavior and population change; future methods; contraceptive failure rates; and selected family planning resources.
